The Seasons

The Spring Maiden
Starting the year, she allows life to awaken
Animals come out of hibernation
She gives them a smile and lots of belly rubs
And says hello to the newborn cubs

The flowers bloom and she walks along their path
She feels the earth begin to warm and lets out a laugh
The trees begin to regrow their leaves
And the birds come home to spread the seeds

The Winter General says goodbye
And the sun decides to reemerge in the sky
In-between the two complicated lovers
The Winter General and Mistress Summer

Without the Maiden the world would end
Because there’d be no time for the seasons to blend
From freezing cold to blistering heat
She gives us all a chance to breathe

She brings with her, hope
And allows us to cope
She gives us a chance to start anew
To look at our life and decide what we want to do

For when her season ends
And the next begins
She looks around and sees
She has allowed everyone to feel at ease

Mistress Summer
Coming in hot right out the gate
Comes the season you either love or hate
She allows the sun to stay longer
And makes us feel younger

But with her heat she will surely bring
Bugs that love to bite and sting
Temperatures rise all around
As everyone becomes unwound

Schools out and kids can finally play
Their bodies sticky from the heat of the day
Relaxing by the pool and getting a tan
These things only the Mistress can

Hurricane season begins for the south
And other places the beginning of a drought
The Mistress is fickle and petty
She finds joy in making people sweaty

She can be cruel and she can be nice
One thing for sure is you’ll always need ice
Swimming in pools and hanging out in the park
Waiting all day for it to get dark

Mistress Summer is many things
Think of her while enjoying your flings
Without her you’d have no break
From the daily grind you always undertake

Attendant of Autumn
When the weather cools and leaves turn brown
You know that autumn has come around
The harvest is ready to reap
As we all try not to weep

Pumpkins and apples pile up on our table
And things begin to taste a lot like maple
Birds fly south in search of warmer weather
Friends and family gather together

You see the colors orange and red everywhere you go
While the world gets ready for the season of snow
The Attendant allows for the smooth shift
And he gives us this season as a special gift

Football season begins in the west
School starts and gives parents a rest
The children complain about having to study
And they always come home with their shoes all muddy

They dress up in costumes and knock-on doors
To be given candy bought at grocery stores
They yell out ‘trick-or-treat!’ to all that will hear
And they don’t think about the end of the year

The trees slowly let go of their leaves
As summer and winter interweaves
The Attendant knows that you appreciate him
Even as the day’s light begins to dim

The Winter General
A chill is felt in the air
The Winter General has come, beware
Snow and ice cover the ground
And now no animals can be found

A man in red leaves you gifts under a tree
But only if you’re nice, is that a guarantee
It’s called the most wonderful time of the year
But that’s because of a sleigh pulled by reindeer

The General believes in tough love
He doesn’t let the sun stay high above
The nights will now last longer
He thinks this will make us stronger

Whether he’s right or whether he’s wrong
It’s still nice to hear a Christmas song
The plants begin to die and wither
And all we can do is stand there and shiver

While winter might seem brutal and hard
It’s important that we don’t disregard
The things that make the season great
Find frozen water and go skate

It’s the season of giving
And getting ready for a new beginning
The Winter General might seem rude
But at least we get to eat lots of delicious food
